Measuring Your Bird's Foot for Shoe Sizing

Measuring your Bird's Feet

You may need to measure your fowl's feet to determine which size poultry shoe will work best for your fowl. If you have a special request for Custom Shoes, you may also choose to photograph and measure your fowl's feet (instead of tracing). When measuring, do NOT add to the total or you will end up with shoes that are too big.

To measure you fowl's feet, you will need a measuring device such as: If you do not have a sewing/tailor's measuring tape available, you can measure your fowl using a piece of string. Simply place a length of string along the lines shown in the diagram below and mark or cut the string. You can place the measured piece of string next to a measuring device such as a ruler or a yard stick to attain the measurement.

If you are trying to determine which size to get for your fowl, you will only need one measurement (the purple line shown below). You can measure in Inches or in Centimeters. You can either place your bird-feet first, down onto your measuring device or you can hold your fowl and place the measuring device up to your fowl's feet.

Use the following chart to determine the correct size to order. If your bird's foot is close to two different sizes, choose the smaller size unless you are ordering closed-toe shoes and your bird's toenails are longer than normal.

The Purple Line

You will need to measure from the bottom back the foot (not including the back toe), down the middle of the foot, to the end of the middle toe (not including the toe nail).

Additional Information

Please take care when measuring your animal. DO NOT ADD to the length of the measurements. Adding length to measurements will most likely result in returns/resizing. If your fowl is too upset or moves around too much while taking the measurement, it is best to try again at a later time. Sometimes placing a towel or cloth loosely and gently over your fowl's head will help it calm down. Unfamiliar items may scare your animal. If your animal is scared of your measuring device, you may need to acclimate your animal to the device over a few days before measuring.
